About

Ryan Singer has over two decades of experience in residential design. His expertise lies in crafting custom, single-family residences with a deep-seated passion for creating timeless, contemporary designs. With a diverse portfolio spanning homes, commercial buildings, and restaurants, Ryan is recognized for his meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to quality.

One of Ryan's distinguishing features is his competitive pricing structure, typically ranging from 9% to 10% of the construction cost. This commitment to affordability, combined with his membership in the American Institute of Architects, reflects his dedication to making architecture accessible to a broader audience.

Ryan is a proud graduate of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and has enriched his knowledge through urban planning studies in the Czech Republic. As a creative and innovative architect, he continually seeks fresh approaches to enhance the built environment, driven by his unwavering passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces.

Design Philosophy

"Living spaces nurture you and enhance who you are. The strive for simplicity and tranquility are paramount because removing complexity in life allows for well being and health. Design should get out of the way, to reduce the amount of conflict that already inhabits much of daily life

I was born and raised in Laguna Beach, California, looking at the horizon. It has affected my subconscious and eye for aesthetics. Visual intuition and a sense for sensual materials and patterns are part of my every waking observation. I studied architecture at Calpoly, San Luis Obispo, and also grew fond of graphic design and user interface. Restraining the palatte, simplifying experience, prioritizing vista, and removing the superfluous  all help to create essential architecture; this is the best backdrop for living" (2001).

Building a Sustainable Future

In our ongoing efforts to build homes, I strongly believe it's crucial to give back to the Earth, making it better than we found it. This notion makes perfect sense to me, and I wholeheartedly encourage fellow design professionals and those in related fields to take action in support of our planet.

As our planet rotates ceaselessly with us aboard, I draw inspiration from the Native American perspective, understanding that we are stewards of this Earth. I urge you to lend your voice in its protection.

Here are a few ways through which I am effecting positive change with my clients. At the very least, we should aim to leave things as we found them, and striving to make things better is a meaningful step towards a brighter future for all.

This is my pledge to our planet. 🌎 Always on the lookout for innovative ways to mend and cherish it. Here's to a brighter, greener tomorrow.

plant 5 trees for each 1 tree used

On average, it takes approximately 40 trees to build a typical 2,000 square foot home. At Sustainable Architecture, we're committed to balancing what we use in our projects. For every tree used, we plant five more, ensuring a positive impact on our environment.

Our efforts extend globally, supporting initiatives like the Monarch butterflies in Mexico. Together, we can create a brighter, greener tomorrow.

1000 trees planted … and counting

I've planted 1000 trees to date, all thanks to your support and my commitment. These trees, equivalent to 50,000 square feet of construction saved, are funded by my fees. Some clients also choose to match my donation, not only contributing to a greener world but also potentially benefiting from tax deductions for their generous contributions.

He is very down to earth and wonderful to work with.

  • “My husband and I feel very lucky to own a Mark Singer designed home in Laguna Beach, California.

Our home was built in 1990 and we purchased it in 2004. In 2006, we contacted Mark Singer's office as we were interested in doing some exterior renovations. Mark referred us to his son, Ryan, who also is a designer.

We contacted Ryan in 2006 and have been happy to know him for 10 years now! Ryan has been wonderful to work with. We started the design process with him in 2006. Ryan is thoughtful and never rushes the design process. He provided us with excellent design ideas and was open to our suggestions and ideas as well. We always appreciated that about working with Ryan. He provided us with computer renderings as we explored various ideas.

In 2008, we had to put our project on hold for several years due to a challenging economy and some family situations. We found Ryan to be patient and understanding thru all of that.

We re-engaged Ryan in 2012 to resume the design process on our exterior renovations. Some of our project ideas has changed in those years, and Ryan was always there to suggest appropriate modifications to the design and materials.

Ryan was awesome at being there for us every step of the way in getting the design review approval in Laguna Beach--from creating the plans to contacting the listing service letter to organizing the neighborhood meeting to attending the design review hearing. He was great!

We were so delighted when we received approval on the project in January 2014!! We had a newborn baby at the time and were not ready to begin construction.

We re-engaged Ryan at the end of 2015 as we needed to get an extension on our design review approval. Ryan was there for us again like he always had been. We received the extension and then Ryan created the structural plans for the project in early 2016. We were again very happy when he worked with us thru that process, and those plans were approved in May.

Construction began in June 2016, and Ryan has visited the site several times to provide more design input, answer questions of the general contractor, and provide more plans as needed in the process.

Ryan is a very talented designer. He is patient, responsive and open to his clients' ideas and wishes. Ryan has impressive experience in all aspects of the process--from the design to submittal to approval process. And he will be there for you during construction... Invaluable! We can't wait to add photos of the finished project!

Thank you, Ryan, for your hard work and 10 years of collaboration!!”
